HANOI: Vietnam's central Da Nang city will set up a coastal economic zone which will include an international transshipment seaport in the near future.

Covering an area of 7,199 hectares, including 2,311 hectares of land and 4,888 hectares of water surface, in the four districts of Hai Chau, Thanh Khe, Lien Chieu and Son Tra, the zone will include Lien Chieu seaport, the Da Nang Department of Planning and Investment said on Wednesday.

Da Nang, the third biggest city in Vietnam in terms of economy and urbanization, will call for big companies to pour money into developing Lien Chieu international transshipment seaport which will also help reduce workload for the operational Tien Sa Port.

Now, Tien Sa Port in Da Nang is a pivotal part of the East-West Economic Corridor, the gateway to the Pacific Ocean for Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam's central region.

Da Nang's economy grew 9.04 percent in 2016, while Vietnam's expanded 6.21 percent. Meanwhile, the city made export turnovers of 1.3 billion U.S. dollars, and lured over 5.5 million visitors, including nearly 1.7 million foreigners.

By the end of last year, Da Nang had housed 18,680 enterprises with total registered capital of over 90,600 billion Vietnamese dong (more than 4 billion U.S. dollars), and 430 foreign-invested projects worth 3.7 billion U.S. dollars, said the department.
