KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China has contributed significantly to the improvement of security situation in Asia by forging better ties with other countries and facilitating the dialogue on the Korean Peninsula, a former senior Malaysian diplomat said.

The remarks came days before the 17th Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, officially known as the Asia Security Summit. Security situation in Asia, the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and fighting terrorism, among others, are expected to take the center stage of the Shangri-La Dialogue to be held from June 1 to June 3.

At the top level, the security situation in Asia has been much better now compared with last year, said Abdul Majid Ahmad Khan, who served as Malaysia's ambassador to China from 1998 to 2005.

Majid attributed the improvement of security situation in Asia partly to recent summits, namely the summit between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and South Korea, the informal summit between the leaders of China and India and the trilateral summit of China, Japan and South Korea.

"For me, these all resulted in a positive trend compared with last year. Though these meetings are not problems solving but they have lessened the tensions," Majid told Xinhua in an interview.

Situation in Asia's security seems to be moving for the better, although there are still uncertainties, said Majid, adding that one of the factors contributing to uncertainties is U.S. President Donald Trump's unpredictability.

U.S. allies like Japan are seeking better ties with China to "hedge" against the unpredictability as they remain dubious over the U.S. commitments, Majid said.

"China has maintained an inclusive and wholistic approach. China's desires to improve relations with all these countries are always there."

Majid said Southeast Asian countries welcome better relations between major countries.

On the upcoming Shangri-La Dialogue, Majid predicted that the situation on the Korean Peninsula will be one of the major topics, in which China will continue to play a significant role.

When Majid served as the ambassador to China, he was concurrently accredited to the DPRK.

The potential summit between the DPRK and the United States hinge on the gap between the two sides, and the Chinese approach highlighted by its "double suspension" proposal, could help to narrow the gap, Majid said.
