Developing early literacy skills in children Green Apple International School-GAIS library has carefully offered early literacy programming to kindergarten children in the form of storytimes. Through the use of a wide range of high-quality picture books, songs, poetry, fingerplays, puppets and crafts, GAIS library has been making literacy fun! Our library program has created inviting spaces for children to enjoy literacy-rich, hands-on experiences in an interactive and caring environment. GAIS library has also provided tips for parents and caregivers on how to select and use age appropriate materials for their children.

Children won't find reading pleasurable if there is too much pressure on them. It's important to make sure teachers read to kindergarteners much more than kindergarteners read for themselves or other people, making it a more supportive environment. So, a relaxed atmosphere and a positive ethos around reading is really important. GAIS recently hosted an educational tour to the national library. It was appreciated that our students lined up properly and walked silently into the library. Interestingly, they searched and looked at picture books, doing some art and craft activities and coloring sessions in a well-behaved manner. Our educators also conducted a story telling session with helpful reflections of the story for our students.  These activities help expand their vocabularies, broaden and enrich their experiences and stimulate brain development.

Just as importantly, Cambodian National Library is an institution dedicated to the sharing of information and ideas. Our national library can never progress without access to knowledge and it gives the public open access to books, pictures, articles, documentaries and other resources and gives us all a place to gather and share them. On behalf of GAIS management, we would like to express our profoundest thanks to Cambodian National Library for allowing our kindergarten children to access library kindergarten arts, crafts and storytimes. This is necessary for school readiness refers to a combination of the different skills that lead to school success. These include positive early literacy experiences, physical and mental health, social skills, playing well with others, as well as basic cognitive skills, curiosity and enthusiasm about learning.
